Revamping the LMS with Modern UI and Secure, Easy PDF Access
- LMS
- Django
- Google Drive Api

Overview
Aapathshala is a Django-based Learning Management System serving a large collection of educational materials. I joined the project as part of a development team to improve the platform’s usability, performance, and scalability.
My work focused on modernizing key user interfaces, replacing a limiting Google Drive iframe implementation, and building a secure, scalable PDF browsing experience capable of handling tens of thousands of documents.
Over time, my contributions evolved from UI improvements into deeper platform enhancements including search, performance optimization, and internal tooling.
Challenges
The platform had several technical and product limitations that affected usability and scalability. The PDF library relied heavily on a Google Drive iframe embed, which provided almost no control over the user interface and created a fragmented browsing experience. It also made advanced search and structured navigation difficult to implement.
As the content library grew toward 40,000+ PDFs, the existing approach became increasingly inefficient. Navigation through study materials was slow and unintuitive, while the hero section and main navigation of the LMS felt visually outdated. In addition, internal MCQ creation workflows were largely manual and time-consuming.
UI Modernization
I redesigned and rebuilt the platform’s hero section and main navigation to improve visual clarity and overall usability. The work focused purely on UI/UX improvements while staying consistent with the existing Django architecture.
The updated interface introduced:
- A cleaner and more modern hero layout
- Improved navigation structure
- Better content hierarchy and spacing
- Stronger responsiveness across devices
These changes significantly improved first impressions and made the platform easier for students to navigate.
Scalable PDF Library System
One of the most impactful improvements was replacing the Google Drive iframe solution with a fully controlled document delivery system powered by the Google Drive API.
The previous iframe-based approach restricted UI customization, limited search capabilities, and created long-term scalability concerns. To solve this, I built a custom document access layer using Django on the backend and JavaScript on the frontend.
A key part of the implementation was introducing Fernet-based encryption for each Google Drive item reference. This ensured that file and folder IDs were never exposed publicly and prevented users from discovering the underlying Drive structure. The new system provided secure, controlled access while remaining highly scalable.

MCQ Generation Scraper
To support the content team, I developed an internal automation tool using BeautifulSoup (bs4) to assist with MCQ question generation. This scraper helped extract structured data from source materials and reduced the amount of manual work required.
By automating parts of the question creation workflow, the team was able to produce content more quickly and consistently.
Maintenance & Optimization
In addition to feature development, I provided ongoing platform support throughout my involvement. This included fixing bugs, improving performance, optimizing database queries, and strengthening overall system stability.
My role gradually evolved from targeted UI updates to broader contributions that improved the reliability and scalability of the LMS.
Impact
This revamp significantly improved the Aapathshala learning platform. The LMS now benefits from a modernized interface, a fully controlled and secure document delivery system, and scalable browsing for a library of over 40,000 PDFs.
The platform is faster, easier to navigate, and better prepared for future growth, while internal content workflows have also become more efficient.
